How to update your name on your passport with an Unenrolled Deed Poll

If you're wondering if the UK Passport Office will accept an unenrolled Deed Poll, the answer is: yes!

Note that it's not a legal requirement to update your passport as soon as you change your name, unlike your Driving Licence, so if you have some validity left that you don't wish to lose, you can put it off until your passport runs out. You can request the name change on your passport by either:

  • Collecting a hard copy from your local Post Office
  • Applying for a renewal online

Updating your passport will be classed as a renewal, and therefore for an Adult Application will cost £82.50 if you renew online, or £93.00 if you complete a paper form and a Child's Passport will cost £53.50 if you renew online, or £64.00 if you complete a paper form. Before you can apply for the change, you need to request your Deed Poll, which you can do with Vital Certificates online in under 10 minutes! Click below to get started.

Use your Deed Poll to update your passport

You can have your Deed Poll application completed in under 10 minutes. Our specialists will check over your details and prepare, bind and seal your Deed Poll for you and post it out to you. Once you receive your Deed in the post, you can then send it to the HM Passport Office with a completed renewal form, which you can pick up from your local post office or complete online.

Who can change their name with a Deed Poll?

Firstly, you need to make sure you meet certain requirements in order to change your name:

  • You're an individual aged 16 or over
  • You're a British citizen
  • You're resident in England or Wales
  • You're of sound mind to make the decision of changing your name

If you have just got married, or divorced, and you have your marriage certificate or Decree Absolute, you can use these to update your name on your passport instead of a Deed Poll. This is providing you are using your new name as it's written on your certificate, and not double-barelling or using a different name other than your married/maiden name.

If you're not a British National, but you're a British Citizen living in the UK, you may still be able to apply for a UK Deed Poll. You will need to contact the Embassy of your native country to ensure they will accept a UK-issued Deed Poll to update any official ID, such as a non-UK passport, through them.

What our customers say

What do I need to provide to update my name on my Passport with a Deed Poll?

To update your Passport with a Deed Poll, you'll also need to provide one other piece of documentary evidence that you're using your new name. This could be any of the following which displays your new name:

  • HMRC document
  • Bank Statement
  • Payslip/letter from your employer
  • Council Tax Bill

You'll need to post this, along with an original copy of your Deed Poll to the Passport Office. We always recommend getting several copies of your Deed Poll when you place your order to allow you to update your details faster with several organisations at once, as some can take several weeks or even months to return your original to you. It also protects against loss in the post.

Who can witness a Deed Poll?

You will need to have 2 witnesses present with you when you're signing your Deed Poll, who will need to counter-sign with you. These witnesses much meet the following criteria:

  • be over 18 years old
  • know who you are
  • not be a relative or someone you live with
  • be a resident in England or Wales

Once all 3 of you have signed the Deed Poll, it's now a legal document and good to go! Remember that you can't make any changes to the Deed after it's been signed, or it will invalidate the document.
