Somerset House, on the banks of the Thames in London, historically held public records such as birth, marriage & death certificates. This has since closed and currently no public counter service exists to obtain copy certificates nationally due to the closure also of the Family Records Centre. It is still possible to obtain a copy certificate from the registry office responsible for the registration of the birth, marriage or death at the time.
